WORKING FOR ENERGY
The Department of Energy (DoE) under an MOU have partnered with SANERI as the Implementing Agent to develop a new national initiative entitled "Working for Energy and accordingly SANERI have established a Programme Management Office and give operational effect to this partnership and the national programme, "Working for Energy".
Programme Objectives
The Programme has two distinct foci, one being the provision of energy through renewable energy technologies and the second being the facilitation of energy management, both using labour intensive methodologies to stimulate sustainable job creation, local economic development and technology skills transfer and capacity development within a South African context.
Focus 1: Provision of Energy
The provision of energy through renewable energy technologies such as:-
- Biomass from invasive alien plants and bush encroachment
- Charcoal derived from invasive alien plants and grasses
- Biofuels development and implementation in rural applications
- Mini-Grid Hybrid and Smart Grid Systems and
- Micro hydro systems
Focus 2: Energy Management & Demand Side Management
The facilitation of Energy Management and demand side management through:-
- Framework for energy audits and energy management planning for schools, home and business
- Framework for the development and Installation of Biomass ceiling materials for installation as EE improvements for poor or rural households
- Frameworks for provision of energy and water saving technologies for both retro-fitting and new works and
- Frameworks for the development and of Measurement and Verification protocols for DSM projects incorporated under the programme
Programme Activities
The Programme and associated project activities are managed, controlled and administered by the PMO (under the auspices of SANERI). The PMO are accountable to a Programme Steering Committe (PSC), and are assisted by a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC).
As the Programme gains momentum and demonstrates various technology streams, intersted partners are invited to submit project business cases and best practice methodologies within the focus areas to the PMO. In order to facilitate the technology, social, economic and capacity development integration, various demonstration projects will be considered in the short term.
One such project has already been identified, and the "GREENING ROBBEN ISLAND" project is currently in development, whereby it is proposed to reduce the Island and support infrastructures dependence on fossil fuels by installing alternate renewable technology and efficient energy management.
