Who is eligible for a SANERI bursary?
Students doing Masters and Doctoral research-based studies in the following thematic areas:
- Energy infrastructure optimisation;
- Energy efficiency and demand side management;
- The impact of energy use on the environment;
- The role of energy in stimulating socio-economic development;
- Cleaner fossil fuel development, including clean coal technologies and
- Renewable Energy
Applications for postgraduate coursework-based studies will also be considered but preference will be given to research-based studies.
Saneri supports the equity targets of national government and therefore preference will be given to historically disadvantaged and women students.
How much will be available to students in bursary programme?
An amount of R50 000 per year is available for Masters students over a period of two years and an amount of R65 000 per year is available for PhD students over a period of three years.
Applications should be in the form of a motivation outlining the proposed course of study and the public benefit that would materialize from the outcomes of such work. A letter of support from the relevant academic supervisor for the proposed scope of study should be submitted together with the motivation. The candidate’s previous academic record should also be attached.
What are the specifications to apply for a bursary?
The applicant has to complete an application form with the following documents:
Proof of citizenship; acceptance of conditions, appropriately signed and completed by
the university authority; proof of registration / proof of commencement of research and
a full certified academic record.

Does SANERI do its own research?
Yes, SANERI is mandated to undertake research as its primary function, however, during the star-up phase it necessary to build human capacity upon which SANERI can draw for its research programmes. Hence the initial focus on producing graduate student via chairs and bursaries. It is expected that SANERI will establish its own laboratories within the next few years.
